FERC Order No. 2222 Can Drive Innovation, Lower Costs Across the U.S. Considering the Range of Use Cases for Distributed Energy in Wholesale Markets

In a new report, AEE outlines multiple use cases for distributed energy resources , illustrating the benefits of allowing aggregated DER participation in wholesale electricity markets under FERC’s landmark order.
 
WASHINGTON, D.C., June 10, 2021 – Today, national business group Advanced Energy Economy (AEE) released a report illustrating use cases for distributed energy resources (DER) in wholesale electricity markets that DER aggregators and other stakeholders expect to pursue under the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission’s (FERC) Order No. 2222. These use cases demonstrate how increased DER participation in wholesale markets can improve competition, lower rates, give customers greater choice, and provide needed flexibility to support the reliability and resilience of the electricity grid. In the report, AEE also offers recommendations to guide Order No. 2222 compliance planning efforts currently underway by grid operators to ensure that implementation of the landmark order overcomes barriers that stand in the way of delivering the full value of DERs to customers and regional grid operators.

POWHATAN, VIRGINIA, June 8, 2021 — Today, business group Virginia Advanced Energy Economy (Virginia AEE), its member, Virginia-based solar developer Sun Tribe, and BrightSuite Solar, a subsidiary of Dominion Energy, hosted Virginia and U.S. congressional lawmakers for the unveiling of Powhatan Elementary School’s recently completed solar energy rooftop array. The project illustrates the impact of Virginia’s Clean Economy Act and growing advanced energy employment across the Commonwealth, expected to increase by 8% according to AEE’s latest jobs fact sheet. The solar arrays at Powhatan County Public Schools were developed through a partnership between BrightSuite and Sun Tribe.

Landmark Regional Electricity Grid and Transmission Bill Passes Colorado Legislature

Colorado House passed bipartisan Senate Bill 72, calling for a multi-state regionally interconnected electricity market to improve grid resilience, reliability, and reduce customers’ energy costs.

DENVER, June 3, 2021 — Today, national business group Advanced Energy Economy (AEE) applauded passage of Senate Bill 72* (SB 21-072) by the Colorado House on a strong bipartisan 49-15 vote. SB 72 enables critical investments in the electricity infrastructure needed to reliably transport clean energy across the state and region, and requires state utilities to join a regional transmission organization (RTO) by 2030. Having passed the Senate on a bipartisan vote of 28-6 in April, SB 72 heads to the Governor’s desk.

This level of targeted stimulus would attract $23 billion in complementary private investment, save customers $4.1 billion annually, and add 433,000 jobs, measured in job-years, for West Virginians.

CARSON CITY, May 31, 2021 — Today, national business group Advanced Energy Economy (AEE) applauded the Nevada Assembly for passing Senate Bill 448* by a 32-10 vote following unanimous Senate approval on May 20. Demonstrating the bipartisan appeal of the new energy economy, this major bill will jumpstart investment in electric transportation infrastructure and require state utilities to join a regional transmission organization (RTO) by 2030, creating jobs and reducing energy costs for all Nevadans. The bill now heads back to the Senate for concurrence, and then will go to the Governor’s desk for signature. Its approval will drive significant short- and long-term economic development by spurring in-state critical energy infrastructure, renewable energy generation, and electric vehicle infrastructure projects.

Governor’s Budget Update Boosts California’s Clean Transportation and Advanced Energy Investments

Governor Newsom’s May budget revision doubles proposed funding to $3.2B for the state’s clean transportation programs, securing California’s role as a national leader in electrifying transportation. The revised budget also includes over $900 million to accelerate the state’s progress towards 100% clean energy.

SACRAMENTO, May 14, 2021 — Today, national business group Advanced Energy Economy (AEE) commended California Governor Gavin Newsom for his May budget revision, which increases proposed support for clean transportation and energy programs in the state. The proposed $3.2B clean transportation investments would focus dollars on a range of zero emission priorities including accelerating the transition of heavy-duty vehicles such as trucks and school buses to zero emission, providing multi-year funding support for light-duty incentives for low-income households to afford a ZEV, and expanding electric vehicle infrastructure buildout statewide. The revised budget also includes support for growing and attracting additional ZEV manufacturing to the state, a significant growth opportunity for California. Finally, the budget strategically invests in a suite of activities to accelerate renewable and advanced energy development to promote resilience and reliability.
