Indiana AEE released employment data showing 90,600 people work in Indiana’s advanced energy sector, compared to nearly 65,000 jobs in the production of auto parts.

INDIANAPOLIS, August 26, 2019 — Today, business group Indiana Advanced Energy Economy (Indiana AEE) reported the latest employment data, which shows that Indiana has 90,600 people working in advanced energy. This represents significantly more workers than those in Auto Parts Manufacturing (64,873), and nearly double those working at Schools, Colleges, and Training Programs (52,217) across the Hoosier state. The U.S. employs 3.5 million people in advanced energy jobs nationally.

According to the Advanced Energy Now 2019 Market Report, the market for electricity delivery and management, which includes advanced transmission and distribution products and services, recorded the highest compound annual growth rate (CAGR) in the period 2011 to 2018 worldwide (18%). In the United States, CAGR was a healthy 11% over that time. The year 2017 was one of the biggest for electricity delivery and management, recording 28% growth globally and 14% in the United States. While the market plateaued somewhat in 2018, with global growth at 6% and a slight decline in U.S. revenue, electricity delivery and management products will continue to receive significant investment in the coming decade.

According to the Advanced Energy Now 2019 Market Report, advanced electricity generation is now the second largest advanced energy segment globally, having been displaced as the biggest by advanced transportation in 2017. At US$453 billion, advanced electricity generation was down slightly in 2018. Global revenue has been largely flat for the past two years, dropping roughly US$1 billion each year since 2016, but the total masks significant growth in solar and hydropower in 2017, nuclear power in 2018, and wind in both years.

More than 100,000 workers, growth three times Virginia’s overall jobs growth rate, and advanced energy companies expecting to increase jobs by 7% in 2019 — yet obstacles remain

RICHMOND, August 6, 2019 — Today, national business group Advanced Energy Economy (AEE) released a fact sheet showing that Virginia has 101,400 people working in advanced energy. This represents more than those employed by hospitals (98,549), and twice as many as those in real estate (43,181) across the Commonwealth. The U.S. has a total of 3.5 million working in advanced energy jobs throughout the nation.

In an increasingly changing energy world, state energy markets vary widely in how they allow companies to compete for and retain customers. And that's beginning to matter more in states with large retail customers in a (mostly) regulated vertical energy market, such as in Virginia. 

Dominion Energy, the state's dominant utility, in May filed an application with the State Corporation Commission (SCC) for approval of its 100% renewable energy tariff. If approved, that tariff offering would prevent other retail electricity providers from competing in the market to give large and residential customers a 100% renewable option.
