Suedeen Kelly, Partner at Jenner & Block and former FERC commissioner, joined Institute’s Board in 2020

WASHINGTON, DC, June 6, 2023 – Today, national nonprofit organization Advanced Energy Institute announced that Suedeen Kelly, Partner at Jenner & Block, is the new Chair of the Institute’s board, where she has served as a board member since 2020. In this role, Ms. Kelly will elevate the Institute’s role and impact promoting understanding of the benefits of the transition to 100% clean energy and electrified transportation in America.

“At this critical juncture for our nation’s energy system, we are honored to have Suedeen’s expertise and leadership guiding our efforts to shine a light on the benefits of advanced energy for America,” said Heather O’Neill, President and CEO of Advanced Energy United, the sister business association of the Institute. “Suedeen is a proven public leader and a sought-out expert across the industry, giving her unique insights into the needs and opportunities to educate policymakers across the country.”

At Jenner & Block, Suedeen Kelly co-chairs the firm’s Energy Practice, representing clients in the energy industry on business, regulatory, litigation, enforcement and policy matters. She served two terms on the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) under Presidents Bush and Obama, was chairwoman and commissioner of the New Mexico Public Service Commission and served as regulatory counsel for the California Independent System Operator. Ms. Kelly was also a lawyer for the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the Natural Resources Defense Council.

“It’s more important than ever for trusted organizations like Advanced Energy Institute to engage with the people making key decisions about how we power our economy in the coming decades,” said Suedeen Kelly. “I’ve seen firsthand the impact that the Institute’s education and engagement has with decisionmakers, and I’m eager to work with the organization to expand its work helping people to understand the enormous benefits and opportunities that transitioning to 100% clean energy will have for Americans and our economy.”

Kelly replaces Matt Rogers, founder & CEO at Mill, founder at Incite.org, and co-founder at Nest, who held the role of Chair over the past five years. “Matt served as a capable and generous leader of our Institute board, providing strategic guidance and insight that helped us grow into the well-positioned organization that we are today,” O’Neill shared. “We are truly grateful for his support and wish him well as he focuses on his newest venture transforming consumer management of food waste at Mill.com.”
