The Senate Finance Committee has approved a two-year extension for most tax provisions that expired at the end of 2013. Some of the tax credits that stayed in tact include; tax credit for research and experimentation for small businesses that have no income tax liability, the wind production tax credit and bonus depreciation. Tesla reported a company record of $761 million in revenue in its fourth quarter earnings. According to CEO Elon Musk, this exceeds the target of 25% gross margin he set earlier in the year and earned 33 cents per share. It also says that it expects a 55% jump in sales in 2014 and improve its gross margin to 28% by the end of the year. Read more here and here.

At the stroke of midnight on New Year’s Eve, a number of federal tax code provisions critical to advanced energy growth disappeared. That’s because Congress has allowed itself to make tax law by inertia. Without Congress saying a word or taking a vote, millions of dollars of tax credits to bolster investment and entrepreneurship simply vanished. Congress should act now to extend these tax provisions retroactively.

Tom Carlson, AEE's Government Affairs Policy Associate, travelled to North Carolina to speak on a panel. The Triangle Business Journal offered video of the event and quoted Carlson: "Carlson of Advanced Energy Economy said energy companies are not only asking legislators to extend the current tax cuts so investment conversations can continue, but they are also hoping to convince legislators to create long-term policies that are tech-neutral; in other words, put more permanent tax incentives in place for market stability."
