More Indiana Workers in Advanced Energy Than in Auto Parts Manufacturing, Nearly Double Those Working at Schools and Colleges — Strong 4% Growth Expected in 2019

Latest employment data shows growth of advanced energy jobs was four times the state’s overall jobs growth in 2018, with a 4% increase expected by employers for 2019

INDIANAPOLIS, August 26, 2019 — Today, business group Indiana Advanced Energy Economy (Indiana AEE) reported the latest employment data, which shows that Indiana has 90,600 people working in advanced energy. This represents significantly more workers than those in Auto Parts Manufacturing (64,873), and nearly double those working at Schools, Colleges, and Training Programs (52,217) across the Hoosier state. The U.S. employs 3.5 million people in advanced energy jobs nationally.

According to the Advanced Energy Now 2019 Market Report, the market for electricity delivery and management, which includes advanced transmission and distribution products and services, recorded the highest compound annual growth rate (CAGR) in the period 2011 to 2018 worldwide (18%). In the United States, CAGR was a healthy 11% over that time. The year 2017 was one of the biggest for electricity delivery and management, recording 28% growth globally and 14% in the United States. While the market plateaued somewhat in 2018, with global growth at 6% and a slight decline in U.S. revenue, electricity delivery and management products will continue to receive significant investment in the coming decade.

According to the Advanced Energy Now 2019 Market Report, advanced electricity generation is now the second largest advanced energy segment globally, having been displaced as the biggest by advanced transportation in 2017. At US$453 billion, advanced electricity generation was down slightly in 2018. Global revenue has been largely flat for the past two years, dropping roughly US$1 billion each year since 2016, but the total masks significant growth in solar and hydropower in 2017, nuclear power in 2018, and wind in both years.
