Advanced energy beat state job growth overall; employers expected strong 5% growth for advanced energy in 2020 before COVID-19 health crisis hit

WASHINGTON, D.C., September 10, 2020 — Today, national business group Advanced Energy Economy (AEE) reported the latest employment data in a new fact sheet showing that New Jersey had 62,100 people working in advanced energy in 2019. This represents more workers than those in Hotels, Motels & Casinos (53,740) and triple those in Colleges & Universities (20,012). Nationwide, there were 3.6 million advanced energy workers.

In new background paper, AEE argues that the “Fixed Resource Requirement” should not be first choice for states seeking to defend their clean energy commitments against FERC order they see as undermining state policies

WASHINGTON, D.C., September 3, 2020 – Today, national business group Advanced Energy Economy (AEE) released a background paper arguing that pulling out of regional capacity markets should be a last resort for states to defend their energy choices. In “No Quick Fix: Why Fixed Resource Requirement is Not the Best Way for States to Protect Their Energy Choices,” AEE details the ways that the so-called Fixed Resource Requirement (FRR), which some states are exploring in response to an order by the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) they see as undermining their policy commitments to clean energy, carries with it risks and costs, and that they would be better off prioritizing other options which could bring them closer to achieving their clean energy goals.

Industry group files testimony calling for Indiana Utility Regulatory Commission to end “self-committing” practice that allows utilities to pass extra costs for running uneconomic coal-fired power plants on to consumers 

INDIANAPOLIS, August 3, 2020 – Last Friday, national business group Advanced Energy Economy (AEE) filed its initial testimony* before the Indiana Utility Regulatory Commission (IURC) calling for the Commission to no longer allow Duke Energy Indiana to pass along costs of operating uneconomic coal-fired power plants in the state to consumers.

“Hoosiers should not have to pay more so the state’s utilities can continue to run power plants that are dirty and uneconomic,” said Dylan Reed, Director of Advanced Energy Economy. “Because of a regulatory loophole that lets utilities decide when to run their plants, regardless of cost, Duke was able to overcharge consumers by more than $20 million in just three months in 2019. That has to stop.”

Comments submitted for SCC inquiry on energy storage deployment highlight market opportunities while meeting VCEA implementation targets

RICHMOND, July 29, 2020 — Today, business group Virginia Advanced Energy Economy (Virginia AEE) submitted comments to the State Corporation Commission related to its docket on energy storage deployment* [Case PUR-2020-00120]. The filing responded to a series of questions posed by the SCC. As Virginia AEE's filing highlights, energy storage has a critical role to play in Virginia's energy transition, driven by the recently enacted Virginia Clean Economy Act (VCEA).

ALBANY, NY, July 16, 2020 – Today national business association Advanced Energy Economy (AEE) and the Alliance for Clean Energy New York (ACE NY) reacted to the order in Case No. 18-E-0138* from the New York Public Service Commission (PSC) establishing a statewide electric vehicle charging infrastructure “make-ready” program, which will provide incentives to facilitate the installation of charging stations. This order authorizes $701 million in incentives, which have the potential to stimulate millions of dollars in additional private investment in new electric vehicle charging infrastructure.

WASHINGTON, D.C., July 16, 2020 — Today, national business group Advanced Energy Economy (AEE) applauded the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission's (FERC's) decision to unanimously dismiss a challenge to states' net metering policies on procedural grounds. In April, the New England Ratepayers Association (NERA) filed a petition* asked FERC to declare "exclusive" jurisdiction over behind-the-meter energy generation, essentially undoing state net-metering rules that compensate customers with rooftop solar or other forms of behind-the-meter resource for the excess energy they periodically supply to the grid.

WASHINGTON, D.C., June 30, 2020 — As U.S. policymakers look for cost-effective ways to tackle climate change, a diverse coalition of power generators, trade associations, and think tanks last week sent a letter encouraging PJM to continue its examination of the policy options and implications of carbon pricing in its market. The request comes at a time when many states in PJM either have, or are considering, policies that reduce carbon emissions in the electric sector and are grappling with how best to reconcile those policies with wholesale markets.
