Virginia AEE Applauds Gov. Northam's Appointment of Jehmal Hudson to State Corporation Commission

Posted by Monique Hanis on Jun 9, 2020

Hudson brings deep knowledge, experience and perspective on energy issues and markets from his roles at the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission and in the U.S. Congress

RICHMOND, June 9, 2020 — Today, business group Virginia Advanced Energy Economy (Virginia AEE) leader Harry Godfrey applauded the appointment of Jehmal Hudson by Governor Northam as commissioner of the State Corporation Commission.

"We applaud Governor Northam's appointment of Jehmal Hudson to the SCC. Judge Hudson brings needed geographic, racial, and experiential diversity to the Commission. Such perspective is invaluable as the SCC implements the Clean Economy Act in the months and years ahead, " said Harry Godfrey, Managing Director of Virginia AEE. "The VCEA will help Virginia rebuild and diversify its economy, creating a sustainable, prosperous future for our Commonwealth as we meet 100% of our needs with clean energy."

"Given Va. has one of the smaller utility commissions, with only three commissioners, it's terrific to have the deep knowledge, experience and perspective on energy issues and markets that Judge Hudson brings from his roles at the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission and in the U.S. Congress," added Godfrey.

"We look forward to working with Judge Hudson and the entire Commission as advanced energy generates new jobs and investment across Virginia," said Godfrey

Background:
Virginia's State Corporation Commission (SCC) was created in 1902 as an independent branch of state government originally to oversee the telephone, telegraph, and railroad industries. Its authority has expanded to include oversight of state-chartered financial institutions, securities, insurance, healthcare and utilities. In regulating electric utilities, the SCC is responsible for setting rates, assessing the necessity of new infrastructure, and determining how much of a utility’s costs can be passed on to ratepayers. The SCC is directed by three commissioners, making it one of the smallest Commissions of its kind in the country. Each member of the Commission is appointed by the General Assembly for a six-year term. When the legislature does not act, the Governor has the authority to make an interim appointment.
