THE NATION'S LARGEST MUNICIPAL UTILITY PARTNERS WITH SILVER SPRING NETWORKS TO DEPLOY SMART GRID TECHNOLOGIES

Posted by Industry News on Apr 1, 2013

San Antonio's CPS Energy, which is the nation's largest municipal utility, has announced a partnership with Silver Spring Networks to deploy smart grid technologies to its 740,000 electric and gas customers. Initially, CPS is implementing features like distribution automation and advanced metering, but the utility is laying the groundwork to be able to implement further smart grid features in the future. GovTech reports:

“Because we’re all using that standardized [IPv6] platform, we can work with other types of technologies to incorporate them as new technologies become available,” said Lisa Lewis, a spokeswoman for CPS Energy. “This is such a rapidly changing and growing field that as new things become available, as long as they’re formatted and fit this platform, we should be able to plug them in.”
