BOSTON, MA – Today, the Massachusetts state legislature set a model for the nation by passing comprehensive permitting and siting reforms for clean energy infrastructure, along with key advancements on grid-enhancing technologies and energy storage. National business association Advanced Energy United supported the bill throughout the legislative process.
“This legislation is a crucial step forward, showcasing Massachusetts as a leader in clean energy innovation and policy,” said United Massachusetts State Lead Kat Burnham. “It will eliminate the inefficient and duplicative processes that currently bog down clean energy projects. Massachusetts has removed major barriers to the rapid growth in the clean energy sector.”
The new permitting and siting process is expected to not only boost investment in the state’s clean energy sector but also create new job opportunities and enhance the reliability of the energy grid. By cutting redundant red tape, the bill will accelerate the deployment of renewable energy projects, solidifying Massachusetts as a leader in the nation on clean energy development nationwide. In addition, this bill will enable the adoption of innovative resources to improve electric grid reliability and performance, including grid-enhancing technologies, advanced conductors, and other advanced transmission technologies. The bill also directs the Massachusetts utilities to competitively solicit 5,000 MW of cost-effective energy storage systems by 2030. The legislation now heads to Governor Healey’s desk for signature.
