Posted by Savannah Gribbins on Nov 21, 2024

“Bill Promoting a Clean Energy Grid, Advancing Equity and Protecting Ratepayers” includes comprehensive permitting and siting reforms for clean energy infrastructure, along with key advancements on grid-enhancing technologies and energy storage

BOSTON, MA – Today, Massachusetts Gov. Maura Healey signed into law a landmark clean energy bill that promises to streamline permitting and siting for clean energy projects, invest in grid-enhancing technologies, and establish energy storage targets. This historic legislation positions Massachusetts as a national leader in the clean energy transition while promoting equity and protecting ratepayers. National business association Advanced Energy United supported the bill throughout the legislative process.

“This new law cuts the red tape that has long-stymied clean energy projects, opening the door to new jobs and lower energy costs. Today, Massachusetts demonstrates that faster project deployment, a more reliable grid, and a cleaner, more equitable energy future is possible,” said United Massachusetts State Lead Kat Burnham. “This is the kind of leadership other states should be looking to follow."

The newly signed legislation is expected to accelerate the deployment of clean energy projects. Key provisions include:

  • Streamlined Permitting and Siting: Consolidates permitting processes and creates predictable approval timelines to facilitate clean energy project deployment.
  • Grid-Enhancing Technologies: Integrates cost-effective advanced conductors and innovative resources to improve grid reliability and performance.
  • Energy Storage Targets: Directs utilities to competitively solicit 5,000 MW of cost-effective energy storage systems by 2030.

“This law is about bringing good jobs and clean energy into the Commonwealth,” added Burnham. “It’s going to help ensure we have a reliable and affordable energy system that works for everyone in Massachusetts.”

With Governor Healey’s signature, Massachusetts underscores its commitment to clean energy leadership, serving as a model for states across the country.
