Governor Newsom signs Assembly Bill 825 into law, a monumental step for greater Western regional collaboration

SACRAMENTO, CAToday, California Governor Newsom signed Assembly Bill (AB) 825, the Pathways bill, into law, marking a significant milestone for Western collaboration by allowing California to take part in an independently managed regional electricity market.

AB 825 was developed as part of the West-Wide Governance Pathways Initiative, which brought together a diverse group of Western stakeholders to design a structure for independent market governance, built by and for the West. Greater regional collaboration through an independently governed market will allow the West to share clean, affordable resources across the region, creating a more affordable and reliable energy system.

National business association Advanced Energy United thanks Governor Newsom and the California legislature for their leadership on this important policy, which will unlock billions in ratepayer savings, reduce reliance on expensive peaker plants, and expand renewable energy use.

“This legislation is the culmination of nearly a decade of work to create a more flexible, reliable, and affordable energy future for the West,” said Leah Rubin Shen, Managing Director at Advanced Energy United. “AB 825 paves the way for an independently governed energy market that will deliver a more reliable grid, broader deployment of clean energy resources, and more affordable energy for consumers across the region.”
