Legislation establishes the Texas Energy Waste Advisory Committee
AUSTIN, TX – Today, Governor Greg Abbott signed HB 5323 into law, marking a critical step to help modernize Texas’ electric grid. HB 5323 establishes the Texas Energy Waste Advisory Committee. This committee will bring together leaders from key state agencies including the Public Utility Commission, ERCOT, and the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality to improve coordination, reduce energy waste, boost efficiency, and enhance grid reliability.
“We commend Governor Abbott for taking decisive action to help modernize the Texas energy grid and support strategic investments in our energy infrastructure,” said Matthew Boms, executive director of the Texas Advanced Energy Business Alliance. “HB 5323 will help improve coordination among the different agencies that interact with the grid and ensure that every available megawatt is used wisely, particularly at times when the grid is stressed.”
“This bill supports Texas’ long-term reliability goals, reduces unnecessary costs, and helps position Texas as a national leader on innovative energy policy,” Boms continued. “We look forward to supporting the important work of the Texas Energy Waste Advisory Committee to reduce waste, cut costs, and improve reliability across the grid..”
HB 5323 reflects a cost-effective, coordinated approach to meeting Texas’ growing energy needs without the burden of building massive new infrastructure. With unprecedented load growth on the horizon, the law enables improved alignment between key agencies and leverages more than $3 billion in existing federal and state funding through tax credits, rebates, and programs to eliminate over 4.5 GW of wasted energy and strengthen grid performance across the ERCOT region.
