One step closer to advancing Western integration
Today, national business association Advanced Energy United applauds NV Energy’s signal of intent to join the California Independent System Operator’s (CAISO) extended day-ahead market (EDAM), recognizing the several benefits of joining a unified regional electricity market in the West. NV Energy becomes the sixth market participant to indicate it intends to join EDAM.
Leah Rubin Shen, Managing Director at Advanced Energy United, issued the following statement:
“Currently, much of the Western U.S. is made up of several isolated grid networks rather than a seamless and coordinated grid, which presents us with many challenges, such as keeping the lights on during extreme weather events.
This commitment by NV Energy marks significant progress for market development in the West. EDAM is becoming the most viable day-ahead market in the region, which will attract additional interest, expand the pool of trading partners, and further lower overall costs for market participants.
NV Energy’s involvement is particularly beneficial because it will help connect the Northwest and Southwest electric grids. More connectivity between different parts of the region means fewer barriers to transferring electricity, enabling greater reliability during extreme weather events, such as heat waves.
To establish the broadest regional market, we encourage other entities, especially those in the southwest, to follow in Nevada’s footsteps and join EDAM.”
Advanced Energy United also commends the progress the West-Wide Governance Pathways Initiative Launch Committee has made in Step 1 of their straw proposal that would strengthen the independence of the EIM and EDAM Governing Body, giving the Governing Body primary authority over market rules. The progress of the Step 1 proposal has been an important influence in the recent decision of NV Energy to join EDAM, and formal implementation may be attractive for additional market participants.
