Governor sets 2035 target to transition to electric vehicles and redouble efforts to meet the state’s climate targets
SAN FRANCISCO, September 23, 2020 – Today, national business group Advanced Energy Economy (AEE) applauded California Governor Gavin Newsom's new Executive Order putting the state on a path toward a zero-emission future by 2035 and ensuring clean transportation for all Californians. The Executive Order calls for transitioning vehicles to zero-emission by 2035 while continuing its strong progress to electrify heavy-duty trucks and address emissions related to the transportation sector statewide. In addition, the order provides agencies with direction to accelerate the state’s critical infrastructure efforts to align with the newly stated goal.
"We applaud the Governor for his call to accelerate the state’s clean transportation progress and for setting the vision for a zero emission future for all Californians," said Amisha Rai, managing director at Advanced Energy Economy. “These actions will further cement California’s global leadership on climate while expanding the market for advanced transportation technologies and services in the state, promoting manufacturing, supply chain development, and good paying jobs.”
“AEE stands ready to work with the Administration to ensure this transition benefits all communities and creates workforce opportunities that support existing workers while also promoting pathways for new entrants into the advanced energy and transportation workforce,” said Rai.
AEE has long advocated for expanding the state’s clean transportation efforts. In 2018, AEE sponsored AB 2127 (Ting)*, which directed the California Energy Commission to assess the state’s charging infrastructure needs to meet California’s long-standing goals. Since then, AEE has worked to expand funding for vehicle, infrastructure and mobility programs critical to scaling the market and expanding consumer awareness. In the legislative session that just ended, AEE supported AB 841(Ting)*, which would accelerate the current state PUC process in order to expand infrastructure buildout statewide. This bill is still awaiting action from the Governor.
