Advanced Energy Perspectives

The advanced energy sector has experienced significant job growth in recent years, driven by technology advancements, increased investment in renewable energy sources, and supportive government policies aimed at combating climate change by transitioning away from fossil fuels. Investments in solar, wind, electric vehicles (EVs), and battery storage are creating millions of well-paying jobs across the advanced energy sector. As the advanced energy space continues to flourish, the future of the American workforce will evolve as well, contributing to economic development, energy independence, and positioning the U.S. as a leader in global advanced energy development. 

This year’s California legislative session was filled with twists and turns as lawmakers faced intense pressure to tackle skyrocketing energy bills and prepare the grid for more extreme weather. Amidst these challenges, Advanced Energy United (United) achieved significant victories for advanced energy technologies—but we also experienced some frustrating setbacks in key areas that we will continue to focus on in the coming years. 

Throughout the course of the year, Advanced Energy United has been growing, spreading our footprint across new states, increasing staff capacity, and, most recently, expanding our Board of Directors. This week, we officially recognize and welcome several new board members whose companies have made strategic commitments in support of our mission and our organization.

Advanced Energy United is the only industry association in the U.S. that represents the full range of advanced energy technologies and services, both grid-scale and distributed. The companies joining the Board – from industries as varied as transmission development, DER management, and vehicle fleet electrification – showcase the unique range of United’s transformative engagement where advanced energy business leaders collaborate on strategies that lead to market-changing policy.

Last week, our team had the privilege of attending the 2024 AABE (American Association of Blacks in Energy) National Conference, representing Advanced Energy United and our member companies, specifically a coalition of our members who joined us in a shared sponsorship in support of the event: Caelux, CTC Global, DNV, LS Power, Microsoft, Pattern Energy, Sunrun, and Utilidata.

Navigating the complexities of permitting for U.S. offshore wind projects requires strategic collaboration among diverse stakeholders. To avoid project delays, and to enable large-scale strategic approval processes to happen rapidly, a coordinated effort between the federal government, regulators, developers, and stakeholders is required.  

But, how can this be done? 

On April 2nd, I had the opportunity to moderate a webinar discussion hosted by Reuters exploring this very topic, specifically: how do we streamline decision-making and the permitting process to create a supportive ecosystem for offshore wind projects? I was joined by a group of all-star panelists each of whom is extremely knowledgeable and experienced in this space: Pilar Patterson of Ørsted (an Advanced Energy United member), Stephanie Wilson of Atlantic Shores, Jennifer Flood of Southcoast Wind, and Hollie Emery of the Massachusetts Office of Coastal Zone Management.
