Electric vehicles (EVs) have burst on the consumer scene in recent years, with a wide array of sedans, SUVs, sports cars, vans, and trucks already available for purchase, and national sales triple the number of hybrid vehicles sold in the same period of development.

Clean Energy Trust is a Chicago-based nonprofit that works to launch, fund and grow clean energy companies in the Midwest. In just three years, we have helped launch over 100 clean energy startups that have created more than 280 jobs, registered more than 41 patents and disclosures and turned $750,000 in initial investment into over $40 million in funds raised. We work every day with early stage clean energy entrepreneurs – providing funding, mentorship and commercialization assistance – so we know how important it is to foster a clean energy “ecosystem” that helps them thrive.

1. Hurry Up, It's Time.  Technological change is making clean energy solutions ever cheaper and easier to adopt. The urgency of abating greenhouse gas emissions means that new financing, backed by taxpayers, should support these technological solutions right now. The United States should lead the way to the new power platform.

For the new power platform to leap from status quo-bound impossibility to consumer-driven inevitability, as the communications platform did, we need to avoid imposing the costs of transition on the wrong people, and present the future as it is: an opportunity, not a sacrifice.  No more doom and gloom.
