A new report from the Advanced Energy Buyers Group, a business-led coalition of large energy users facilitated by AEE, explains why organized competitive wholesale markets operated by Regional Transmission Organizations and Independent System Operators (RTOs/ISOs) are foundational to many of the strategies that large energy buyers rely on to increase their use of advanced energy and meet their sustainability targets.

This report prepared for AEE by WoodMackenzie shows that Indiana could benefit by attracting $5.8 billion in investment and creating nearly 25,000 jobs if commercial and industrial (C&I) businesses had more options to procure renewable energy through their electric utilities.

Of the more than 15 gigawatts (GW) of corporate renewable energy deals done to date, less than 2 GW have occurred through utility programs, and the vast majority of power purchase agreements have occurred in states that participate in organized wholesale markets.

In Virginia, several voluntary renewable energy tariffs have been introduced by the state’s two largest investor-owned utilities, Dominion Energy and Appalachian Power Co. Customers also have the option to purchase renewable energy from competitive service providers, with certain restrictions.

The challenge is: are current options sufficient to meet the growing demands of Virginia’s diverse businesses that want renewable energy to power their operations?
