Expanding Virtual Power Plants Across the U.S.

Virtual power plants (VPPs) — collections of customer-sited energy resources aggregated together and coordinated with grid operations — can provide the same or even superior reliability and value to the grid as traditional power plants. As utilities face rising peak load, energy affordability concerns, and increasingly complex reliability needs, VPPs offer a solution by leveraging customer-facing distributed energy resources (DERs) – including smart thermostats, battery storage, EV charging, smart water heaters, and others – to address key grid challenges.

In this webinar, Advanced Energy United and several expert panelists explored successful VPP case studies and discussed opportunities to expand markets for VPPs, including integration of VPPs into resource planning and education of utility commissions. Panelists from the DER, software, and mobility sectors highlighted different VPP models across the country that are meeting the needs of utilities and communities.

Viewers walked away with an understanding of how VPPs can help regulators, utilities, and other grid stakeholders manage key challenges facing the grid, as well as the importance of scaling this solution to meet our energy, affordability and reliability needs.
