In 2023, advanced energy employment nationwide increased by 4%, more than double the growth rate of the overall U.S. labor market. Advanced energy jobs surged from 2022 to 2023, with 4.1 million U.S. workers now working in the sector. Some of these gains were driven by the early impact of tax credits from the Inflation Reduction Act and the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act.
To develop its national fact sheet, Advanced Energy United tracked the five major industry segments fueling this job growth, including Advanced Electricity Generation, Advanced Grid & Energy Storage, Energy Efficiency, Electric Vehicles (EV), and Transmission and Distribution. Of note, United found EV (plug-in hybrid, electric, and fuel cell vehicles) jobs grew by 10%, and advanced generation (renewable energy and nuclear power) jobs grew by 4.5% across the country. This advanced energy employment trend is consistent across the 14 states for which United produced state-specific fact sheets this year, including Arizona, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Florida, Maryland, Massachusetts, Nevada, New Mexico, New York, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Texas, and Virginia.
United's definition of 'advanced energy jobs' aligns closely with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) 'clean jobs' definition, per the 2024 U.S. Energy & Employment Jobs Report (USEER); however, our categorization excludes biofuels. 'Advanced energy' includes:
- All renewable electric power generation technologies, including traditional hydropower
- Nuclear electric power generation and fuel
- Microgrids and grid modernization
- Non-fossil energy storage
- Plug-in hybrid vehicles, battery electric vehicles, and hydrogen fuel cell vehicles
- All energy efficiency
- Transmission and distribution (T&D). (Note that the state-level data do not distinguish between total and clean energy T&D jobs, including those associated with fossil fuels. The DOE estimates that nationally 68% of T&D jobs are associated with clean resources, which is what is reflected in the fact sheets produced.)
