In increasing numbers across the country, city-owned electric companies are trending toward renewable power, with environmental research group ClimateWire reporting that by 2017 more than 13,000 megawatts of new wind energy capacity is expected to come online in the U.S. According to the Advanced Energy Economy Institute’s 2015 market report, solar-powered utilities grew 39 percent in 2014.
