West Lebanon, New Hampshire-based SustainX has activated the world's first megawatt-scale compressed air battery. The battery has a capacity of 1.6MW and uses decades-old air energy storage technology. Basically, the idea behind a compressed-air energy storage unit is that power generators will use excess energy to compress air, and then release the air when energy is needed. The air will cycle turbines once it is released. Read more about compressed air storage and other energy storage technologies at Gigaom.
