Sen. Hancock Files Bill to Form the Texas Energy Waste Advisory Committee

Senate Bill 2455 would address the need for a more reliable, efficient electric grid

AUSTIN, TX – Texas is at a critical turning point, facing the challenge of balancing rising energy demand with the need for a more reliable and efficient electric grid. Although the state leads the nation in energy generation, we are encountering growing challenges in maintaining grid reliability amid unprecedented load growth.

SB 2455 seeks to address this by establishing the Texas Energy Waste Advisory Committee, which will be comprised of members of several different state agencies that currently have oversight of, or interact with, the grid. Led by the Texas Advanced Energy Business Alliance, this legislative initiative represents an important step in securing Texas’ energy future and enhancing grid stability as the state experiences unprecedented load growth in the years ahead – without the need for costly new infrastructure projects. This initiative will also increase coordination among the many different agencies that interact with the grid, improvising efficiency and maximizing current resources. In fact, according to our initial estimates, across agencies, there is over $3 billion in federal and state program spending, in the form of tax credits and rebates, that can be channeled into reducing more than 4.5 GW of energy waste.

“This bill represents an important step towards improving grid reliability and efficiency by reducing energy waste,” said Matthew Boms, executive director of the Texas Advanced Energy Business Alliance. “Texas is facing unprecedented load growth in the years ahead, with a continued influx of individuals, families and business wanting to move to our state.”

“Smart, measured reforms such as this one that seek to reduce waste, increase coordination among different state agencies and improve the performance of the grid can help the entire state of Texas,” Boms continued. “We look forward to working with members in both chambers, and on both sides of the aisle, to pass this solution into law.”
