AEE Statement on 2017 U.S. Department of Energy Jobs Report

WASHINGTON, D.C., January 13, 2017 — AEE issued this statement reacting to the 2017 U.S. Energy and Employment Report to be released by the U.S. Department of Energy today.

We welcome this important resource for understanding the growth of jobs in advanced energy,” said Malcolm Woolf, senior vice president of policy for Advanced Energy Economy, a national business association. “Last year, DOE’s data showed that advanced energy technologies and services supported more than 2.5 million U.S. jobs in 2015, more than mining and natural resources and equal to supermarkets and grocery stores. We look forward to reviewing the new report, which will allow us to determine the employment impact of our growing industry.”

Earlier this year, AEE released detailed employment reports that profiled the diverse range and types of advanced energy workers in various states. They were prepared by BW Research Partnership, the leading workforce and economic development research firm that produced the DOE report.

“One of the most exciting things about working for Johnson Controls is the opportunity to be a part of a global technology company that is working to help the world run smoothly, smartly, simply, and safely with products, services, and solutions to increase energy efficiency and lower operating costs,” said Mary-Suzanne Powell Area General Manager Energy Solutions Johnson Controls, Inc., in a report (p. 10) that showed Florida advanced energy employment totaled more than 106,000 workers.

"It's exciting to work in the energy storage area today—I have an opportunity to enable our transformation to a clean, unbreakable, and flexible power grid," said Kate McGinnis, Western U.S. Market Director, AES Energy Storage in San Francisco. "I enjoy my work: it's fun creating such future-proof solutions."

Kate is one of more than 500,000 advanced energy workers in California, profiled in this report (p.13).

“I really like knowing that what I am doing will benefit our future generations, especially my kids. Wind energy is a clean, sustainable source of energy that will never go away,” said Ryan A. Logan Facility Manager for Pattern Energy’s Amazon Wind Farm, Fowler Ridge, in Benton County, Ind. “I believe renewable energy will make an even bigger impact in the years to come, benefitting all.”

Ryan's profile was featured in a report (p. 10) that showed Indiana had nearly 48,000 advanced energy jobs in 2015.

AEE's Advanced Energy Now 2016 Market Report showed that the U.S. advanced energy market hit $200 billion, nearly double the nation’s beer market, larger than pharmaceutical manufacturing, and closing in on wholesale consumer electronics.
