National business group supports utility commission order codifying 2030 target of 50 percent renewable energy as part of comprehensive effort to modernize the state’s electric power system

[Washington, August 1, 2016] — Today, national business group Advanced Energy Economy (AEE) issued the following statement following the release of the Order Adopting a Clean Energy Standard (Case No. 15-E-0302) by New York’s Public Service Commission formally requiring the state to set a Clean Energy Standard target to derive 50 percent of its electricity from renewable energy by 2030, using sources like wind and solar, while supporting the continued operation of carbon-free nuclear power plants in the near term while renewable energy capacity expands.

“This Commission Order establishing a Clean Energy Standard is a major step in modernizing New York’s electric power system,” said Ryan Katofsky, Senior Director, Industry Analysis, for Advanced Energy Economy, a national business group. “By codifying the goal of 50 percent renewable energy, the PSC is sending a strong market signal that will lead to industry growth and economic development in New York State. Together with the PSC’s ongoing Reforming the Energy Vision proceeding, this Order tells the state and the world that New York is heading toward an advanced energy future ”
