Lockheed Martin’s Intelligent Microgrid Solutions are providing reliable and affordable energy solutions for customers across the globe. The microgrid systems configure and reconfigure local power generation sources and distribution equipment to achieve the lowest energy cost at any moment, as well as maintain secure, reliable power.

Electric utility rates fluctuate throughout the day, resulting in high energy costs for utility customers that do not efficiently manage their power. A microgrid assesses available energy generation sources to determine where adjustments can be made to achieve the lowest cost result and reliably satisfy energy demand. The system essentially pays for itself and continues to provide benefits thereafter.

Microgrids not only ensure secure and reliable power by controlling internal and grid energy sources, but also have the ability to operate independently from the utility grid in case there is a utility outage. International and domestic customers are using microgrid technologies to maintain continuous power at an affordable cost and ensure secure energy in remote locations or campus sites.

In 2012, Lockheed Martin delivered the Integrated Smart BEAR Power System (ISBPS) and the Hybrid Intelligent Power (HI Power) microgrid system to Department of Defense installations. ISBPS equips the U.S. Air Force with lightweight, air-transportable assets to power a mobile air base. HI Power provides the U.S. Army an efficient, reliable and secure microgrid configuration to reduce fuel consumption at tactical operations centers.

In 2010, Lockheed Martin received a contract to demonstrate an Intelligent Microgrid at a U.S. Army’s Brigade Combat Team complex in Fort Bliss. The energy storage system is especially critical in lowering cost and maintaining a steady stream of energy. The system also stores energy to respond to high periods of energy demand and to produce reliable power.

Lockheed Martin microgrid power systems help to fulfill mandates to improve energy efficiency, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, decrease fuel use, and increase the use of renewable energy, while reducing energy costs. The intelligent microgrid exemplifies smart, achievable energy management that aligns with national energy aspirations.
